Who Are You

After the entitled album from one of my favorite rock groups as a pre-teen, I look at this question from quite a different perspective nowadays.

Without going too far down the rabbit hole, we can find out much about ourselves by our past behavior. If we don’t like what we see, then we can engage in new experiences and change how we react. This is how we begin to shape and define who we are.

We can talk all day long about how “giving” of a person we are, but if our actions don’t support that, then we’re kidding ourselves.

There are times when we seek out “goals” and “challenges” because we inherently know it’s in these difficult moments when we can see our true selves come out in full form. You may not like it or maybe you do. But, it’s in these “real” – and albeit chaotic times – when we establish the boundaries of who we are as people and discover what we’re made of.

As we move through life we tend to draw upon these past experiences when we’re unsure whether we can rise to the next challenge. When we do, we are building a foundation that we will utilize for years to come. We’re forming our character.

Just as “trust” takes years to earn and moments to destroy, so is your character.

Who are you?

Feature Your Features

There is a book we read to our youngest son when he was little called “Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon” about a little buck-toothed girl who was the smallest in her class with a voice “that sounded like a bullfrog being choked by a boa constrictor.”

She didn’t care what anybody else thought – even the class bully. She showed him up by doing things her way and coming out on top. Eventually the bully had to accept her into the fold as she was.

It’s not about fitting in or being accepted. That’s not the moral to the story. It’s about accepting what you bring to life and making it your best.

Nothing is more attractive and radiant (inside and out), than a person who knows who they are, accepts it and is proud of what they have. No matter what it may be.

Where Are You?

Often times we can become frustrated with our situation and circumstances in life because we feel we are “stuck” or in a place where we don’t want to be.

We must remember, we are exactly where we need to be.

When we fight and resist where we are, without accepting it, we cannot move past it.

I am not saying we must be content with our place, but we must accept it in order to let it go and transcend the moment.

This also allows us to look around and survey the “lay of the land.” Taking inventory of where we are and sitting in the situation – whether we like it or not – can help us down the road from avoiding the pitfalls of putting us back into the same place in the future.

We need not get frustrated, but educated about where we are. This way we have the road map of how to avoid this place or to get back if we so choose.

Out of Thin Air

I’m always amazed when something manifests itself in my life. Whether it be an artistic endeavor, an idea to be implemented for work or making a commitment to a goal that takes repeated time and effort as one of my hobbies.

The fact that it comes from an idea out of nothing. The firing of neurons and synapses in the brain that culminate into a coherent clustering of information that one can then act on boggles my mind.

I heard it once said that everything that materializes in your life always has two appearances: once as an idea and then as a manifestation. I would concur. We must see it in the ether before we can attract it into our physical lives.

The word I like to use when such things arrive in my world is: bewildered. I’m always bewildered every single time it happens.

After all, it all manifests right out of thin air.

New Avenue

So much of our daily lives is about patterns. Good and bad. We form habits and we tend to repeat them day in and day out. Why? Because it’s comfortable. Certainly, we can accomplish goals we have set forth by forming and executing healthy habits. But, humans like the “known.” We like to know what is in front of us. If we could, we would want to know the results of something in the future before even trying if we could. We want guarantees and we like taking the path of least resistance.

Unfortunately, there are no guarantees. First and foremost, let’s embrace that. Secondly, that path of least resistance you don’t want to get off may be keeping you from trying a new avenue that just might get you the results you’re looking for.

Sometimes the best way to find your way around a new town is by driving until you get lost. Try that new avenue. You’ll find your way home. We always do eventually.
